The central principle of a circular economy is to utilise various materials efficiently and sustainably while preserving natural resources. The minimisation of waste and the efficient use of materials are the core ideals for a true circular economy.
Honkajoki Oy’s operations are based on the circular-economy model. We recycle inedible animal-derived by-products that are generated by farms, abattoirs and meat-cutting plants and classified as waste under the EU’s Animal By-products Regulation. Most of the offal generated in Finland undergoes processing at Honkajoki’s plants, where it is used to produce raw materials for the energy, feed and fertiliser industries. Through this process, by-products derived from the food chain are returned to the production cycle. In addition, we apply ecologically friendly and cost-efficient procedures in our dispatching and logistics services.
We continuously develop our operations and strive to make the processes even more natural than they are now. We generate all the energy required for our operations in Honkajoki ourselves, and our recycling processes are a net generator of energy. As we only process natural raw materials, all of the end products are recyclable and safe, and our fertiliser products are suitable for organic farming. We have the necessary desire and expertise to develop the Finnish circular-economy concept, and thereby also enable its utilisation in developing countries where the availability of energy, waste management and water purity present great challenges.
Our operating environment in Honkajoki boasts a wind farm for harnessing wind power. In addition, the waste heat generated by our processes is used to heat local greenhouses and farming facilities. Environmentally-friendly energy sources and energy efficiency are typical throughout the production area.
Our recycling process applies a finely honed and strictly regulated production model, which contributes to the reutilisation of natural raw materials.
